Tooth Extractions In Laredo TX
There are times when a tooth cannot be saved due to injury, trauma, advanced periodontal disease, or severe decay. Sometimes a tooth is poorly positioned in the mouth, causing problems with adjacent teeth, causing bite misalignment, or interfering with orthodontic care. In these circumstances, tooth extraction may be the only solution.
The Tooth Extraction Process
To prepare you for tooth extraction, Dr. Britton will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, including the tooth, jawbone, and soft tissues. An extraction requires rocking the tooth back and forth to widen the socket to remove the tooth. You will feel pressure during this process if your procedure is done under a local anesthetic, but no pain. If you suffer from dental anxiety, sedation options are also available for your comfort.
Tooth Sectioning
If a tooth is difficult to remove because the roots are curved or the socket does not expand sufficiently, Dr. Britton may section the tooth. This simply means cutting the tooth into sections that can be easily removed one at a time with less trauma to the surrounding area.
Does Tooth Extraction Hurt?
You will not feel any pain during the procedure, as the area is numbed with an anesthetic. As the numbing agent wears off, there will be some mild to moderate pain that is usually easy to control with over-the-counter pain medications and ice packs. Keeping your head elevated also helps. For most patients, any discomfort is gone within 1-3 days.
After Tooth Extraction
After your tooth is extracted, you will be given detailed at-home care instructions. You can also check out our After Extractions information under “Surgical Instructions.” The most important thing to remember is that the first 24 hours following extraction should focus on rest and recovery.
